Steel for Structural Alterations & Remodels
The structural steel for remodels, opening-outs and change-of-use, where the alteration changes how the building carries its loads. We survey, detail, fabricate and install to your engineer's design, to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2 and UKCA marked.

When the layout changes, the structure does too.
Reworking the inside of a building, opening rooms out, moving or removing walls, changing floor levels, or changing what a building is used for, often changes the way loads travel through the structure, and that means new steel. We make and fit the beams, posts and frames a remodel needs, working from your structural engineer's design and, where the building already stands, from a measured survey. Everything is fabricated in our own workshop to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2 and installed by our own team, with the existing structure propped and supported while the steel goes in, and the paperwork handed over for building control.
The steel a remodel needs, surveyed and made to fit.
Beams, posts and frames for alterations and change-of-use, fabricated to your engineer's design and fitted by our own team.
Working to your engineer's design
Your structural engineer works out what the alteration does to the structure and designs the steel. If you have not appointed one, we can point you in the right direction.
Survey of the existing building
Where the building already stands, we measure it, so the steel is detailed to what is really there, not to an old drawing.
The steel the alteration needs
Beams, posts and frames, made to carry the loads on their new paths through the reworked structure.
Propping and installation
Our own team props and supports the existing structure while the walls or floors are altered and the new steel goes in.
Paperwork for building control
You get the drawings, weld records and declaration of performance, so the altered structure can be inspected and signed off.
Change the layout, and you change how the loads run.
When walls move, floors change or a building changes use, the structure has to be re-supported, and that is careful work around a building that is often still standing. We survey, fabricate to your engineer's design under BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2, and install with our own team, propping and supporting as we go, with the paperwork for building control.

Why alterations are survey-first work.
You are changing a building that already stands, so we measure before we make.
About UIS-
01
Survey-led
We measure the existing building first, so the steel fits what is actually there, which matters most on alterations.
-
02
Made to your engineer's calculations
Beams, posts and frames are fabricated to the sizes and connections your structural engineer specifies for the reworked structure.
-
03
BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2, UKCA marked
Fabricated to the execution class structural steel is specified against, with the declaration of performance supplied.
-
04
Fitted by our own team
One team surveys, makes and installs the steel, and props the building while it does, so the alteration stays coordinated.
"I've worked with UIS for several years on some high profile and very complex projects. Their attitude and work ethic are second to none - providing high quality services and products which are delivered safely and on time every time. Overall they are a pleasure to do business with and wouldn't hesitate recommending UIS for any steelwork or metalwork packages."
Questions clients ask us.
Anything that changes how the building carries its loads: removing or moving load-bearing walls, forming openings, changing floor levels, or changing the use of a building. If loads move, steel usually has to carry them, to a structural engineer's design.
Yes. A structural engineer designs the steel for any structural alteration, and building control will want the calculations. If you have not got one, we can point you in the right direction, then fabricate and fit to their design.
Where the building already stands, yes. A measured survey means the steel is detailed to what is really there, so it fits first time and ties into the existing structure cleanly.
Yes. Our own team props and needles the existing structure so it is held while walls or floors are altered and the new steel is fitted.
We are based in South Yorkshire and survey, fabricate and install across the UK with our own teams.
