Steel Access Platforms
Steel access platforms, walkways, and gantries fabricated to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2 and installed to HSE edge-protection standards.

What we deliver.
We fabricate steel access platforms to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2 and install with edge protection compliant with HSG150 and the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Applications include plant-room access, maintenance walkways over process equipment, rooftop access gantries, mezzanine-level platforms, elevated workstations, and pipe-bridge access. Hot-rolled mild steel or stainless steel where the environment requires it, galvanised or powder-coated to suit service life, with GRP walking surfaces available where corrosion is the primary constraint.
What we make.
Every project follows the same certified workflow - so you get the same outcome whether we're making one beam or a thousand.
BS EN 1090 and HSE compliance
Structural fabrication to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2, with edge protection designed to HSG150 construction health and safety guidance and the Work at Height Regulations 2005. Loading calculations are specified by the structural engineer; we fabricate and install to that design. The compliance boundary between design authority and installation is clear.
Platform types and applications
Plant-room maintenance access, walkways over process equipment, rooftop gantries for plant and services, mezzanine-level workstations, elevated assembly platforms, and pipe-bridge access. Each is scoped to the intended service interval and access frequency - the structural and surface requirements for a monthly-access platform differ from those for a daily-access platform, and we identify the trade-offs at the quoting stage.
Mild steel, stainless, or GRP decking
Mild steel structural with galvanised or powder-coated finish for general industrial environments. Stainless structural where the environment is aggressive, such as chemical process spills or wash-down areas. GRP decking bolted to steel support structure where corrosion is the primary consideration - see our GRP walkways page for a full discussion of where GRP is the appropriate specification.
In-house installation team
Our erection crew installs with SSSTS site supervision, PASMA and IPAF certification, and lifting plans prepared by our in-house Appointed Person. Installation alongside live plant or operational facilities is routine. As an example, the Oban plant deck platform was installed on night shifts inside a trading supermarket - the kind of live-site coordination we carry out as standard.
Craftsmanship. Accountability. No shortcuts.
No subcontracted welders. No outsourced site crews. Every project from 3D model to final torque-check is handled by a certified UIS team from our Rotherham facility.

"I'd like to take the opportunity to first and foremost thank UIS for their fantastic support on my recent projects. As a project and managing Director myself it makes projects so much easier using these guys. We simply meet on site to discuss the job at hand. They offer a prompt quotation and I am always informed of their timescales."
Questions clients ask us.
Yes. Loading categories - pedestrian, maintenance with tools, equipment roll-through - determine deck thickness, support spacing, and handrail design. The structural engineer or plant designer specifies the required loading; we fabricate and install to that specification. Fabrication is to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2, with the engineering calculations retained in the handover documentation.
Yes - regularly. Night-shift installation inside operational retail (Oban supermarket plant deck), live-industrial maintenance access, and phased access installation through shutdown windows. CSCS, SSSTS, and PASMA certification across the crew, with full RAMS and method statements for each installation. Fire watches and hot-work permits are in place where site welding is unavoidable.
Three environments justify GRP over steel decking: chemical plants where steel corrodes under process-spill exposure, rooftop plant rooms where corrosion increases total lifecycle cost, and coastal installations where salt air accelerates galvanising degradation beyond the expected service life. In other environments, galvanised steel decking is usually more cost-effective and fit for purpose. See our GRP walkways page for a detailed comparison.
Hot-dip galvanising to BS EN ISO 1461 through our galvanising partner, for general industrial service. Powder-coat to any RAL colour for visible access platforms in commercial environments. Stainless steel structural where the environment is aggressive. Grit-finish or serrated grating where slip resistance is required by the specification. Finish selection is based on service-life requirements, not aesthetic preference alone.
