GRP by Sector

GRP walkways, platforms, stairs, handrails, ladders and fencing are used in every sector. At UIS, we design, fabricate and install all six, using our own site teams.

About this service

Which sectors do we work in?

We work across all sectors. Below is how GRP is used in each of these sectors, with a page for each.

Each sector page lists what we build on that kind of site, the standards that apply, how GRP compares with steel there, and what affects the price.

Which sectors do we work in?
- 30yrs Since 1994 Rotherham · In-house
  1. Wet and corrosive sites

Water and wastewater, food and drink, and sites where steel walkways are rusting. GRP does not corrode.

  2. Sites with live electrical equipment

Substations, power sites and rail. GRP does not conduct electricity.

  3. Roofs, risers and tight spaces

Data centres, housing blocks and car parks. GRP weighs roughly a fifth of the steel equivalent, so our site team can carry the panels in by hand.

How we work

From survey to handover.

We survey, detail, fabricate and install the GRP ourselves, so one company is responsible for the whole job.

01

Survey and measure

We visit the site and agree with you what needs to be reached and how often. On an existing structure we can 3D-scan it, so our drawings match what is on site.

02

Drawings and quotation

Our draughtsmen detail the GRP and any support steelwork to the loads your structural engineer gives us. We then send an itemised quotation that includes fabrication and installation. On major commercial packages the quotation comes back within 1 to 2 weeks.

03

Fabrication

We fabricate the support steelwork and cut the GRP panels and sections to size in our Rotherham workshop, so most of the cutting is done before delivery.

04

Installation

Our own site team installs the GRP under an SSSTS-qualified supervisor, to a method statement written for the job. We cut the GRP to size in our workshop, so there is little cutting on site. Where a panel does need trimming, we cut it with a diamond blade under dust extraction, away from live areas where possible, and no hot-works permit is needed.

05

Handover

At handover we give you the O&M pack, with the manufacturer's test data for the products we installed. The 12-month defect liability period runs from practical completion, in line with standard JCT terms, unless your contract sets different terms.

Why UIS

Why GRP is used on these sites

GRP is used on these sites because it does not corrode, does not conduct electricity, and weighs roughly a fifth of the steel equivalent.

Sir Robert McAlpine logo

"I've worked with UIS for several years on some high profile and very complex projects. Their attitude and work ethic are second to none - providing high quality services and products which are delivered safely and on time every time. Overall they are a pleasure to do business with and wouldn't hesitate recommending UIS for any steelwork or metalwork packages."

Common questions

Questions we get asked.

The material is the same, but we choose the resin, surface, fire grade and fixings for each site: for example, a resin for the cleaning chemicals on a food site, or a UV-stable grade on an exposed roof.

Yes. Tell us about your site and what needs to be reached, and we will explain what we would build in GRP.
