About this service

What does a GRP package from UIS include?

Our GRP package covers all the GRP on a job: riser flooring, roof walkways and step-overs, plant platforms, stairs, handrails and fencing, plus the support steelwork. We detail, fabricate and install the whole GRP package as one subcontractor.

If you are letting the GRP on a commercial or industrial job, the package has to be detailed to your engineer's loads, arrive cut to size for your programme, and be installed by people named on the RAMS.

  1. One subcontractor for all the GRP

We detail, fabricate and install the GRP and its support steelwork, so when a service penetration moves, you have one subcontractor to call.

  2. Cut to size for your programme

We cut the GRP and fabricate the steel in our Rotherham workshop, so the time on site is spent installing.

  3. Paperwork ready

You get the RAMS before we start, the O&M pack at handover, and the accreditations your PQQ asks for.

In detail

What the GRP package covers

What we take on, what we need from you to quote, and what you get at handover.

Riser flooring
GRP panels and support frame at each floor, for fall protection (not fire stopping)
Set by: Loads from your engineer, fire class from your fire strategy
Roof walkways and step-overs
GRP walkways to the plant, with guardrails
Set by: The roof build-up and the plant layout
Platforms and stairs
GRP or steel, to suit the loads
Set by: The equipment and the loads
Handrails and fencing
GRP handrails, guardrails and palisade
Set by: The load class and the perimeter design

What we need from you to quote

  • the general arrangement drawings and the M&E coordination drawings
  • the loads from your structural engineer
  • the fire class for any riser flooring, from your fire strategy
  • the programme and the access windows
  • your site rules and induction requirements

What you get at handover

  • the O&M pack, with the manufacturer's test data for the products installed
  • as-installed drawings
  • the RAMS we worked to
  • a 12-month defect liability period from practical completion, in line with standard JCT terms, unless your contract sets different terms

We price GRP packages from your drawings. These are the main things that affect the price:

  1. the scope across risers, roofs, platforms and handrails
  2. the support steelwork included
  3. the programme and the number of site visits
  4. site access and lifting
  5. working hours
How we work

From survey to handover.

We survey, detail, fabricate and install the GRP ourselves, so one company is responsible for the whole job.

01

Survey and measure

We take off the package from your drawings, and walk the site with your team where it helps. On an existing structure we can 3D-scan it, so our drawings match what is on site.

02

Drawings and quotation

Our draughtsmen detail the GRP and any support steelwork to the loads your structural engineer gives us. We then send an itemised quotation that includes fabrication and installation. On major commercial packages the quotation comes back within 1 to 2 weeks.

03

Fabrication

We fabricate the support steelwork and cut the GRP panels and sections to size in our Rotherham workshop, so most of the cutting is done before delivery.

04

Installation

Our own site team installs the GRP under an SSSTS-qualified supervisor, to a method statement written for the job. We cut the GRP to size in our workshop, so there is little cutting on site. Where a panel does need trimming, we cut it with a diamond blade under dust extraction, away from live areas where possible, and no hot-works permit is needed.

05

Handover

At handover we give you the O&M pack, with the manufacturer's test data for the products we installed. The 12-month defect liability period runs from practical completion, in line with standard JCT terms, unless your contract sets different terms.

Why UIS

Why give the GRP to one subcontractor

When one subcontractor details, makes and installs all the GRP, you deal with one company when a penetration moves or a delivery is short. GRP weighs roughly a fifth of the steel equivalent, so our team can carry it to floors a crane cannot reach.
