Goal-Post & Portal Frames for Wide Openings
A steel beam on two posts, bolted into a goal-post frame for very wide openings or where a supporting wall comes out. We detail, fabricate and install to your engineer's design, to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2 and UKCA marked.

A frame that stands on its own.
Some openings are too wide, or take out too much wall, for a beam to simply bear on the brickwork at each end. In that case the beam sits on two steel posts, bolted together into a goal-post frame, also called a portal frame, that stands up on its own and carries the load down to the foundations. It is the usual answer for very wide rear openings, side-return knock-throughs, and jobs where a supporting wall or column is removed. Your structural engineer designs the frame and its connections; we produce the fabrication drawings, make it to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2, and our own team sets it on its baseplates and bolts it up.

Portal frames for very wide openings, fabricated to your engineer's design and fitted by our own team.
Working to your engineer's design
Your structural engineer designs the frame, the connections and the baseplates for the opening and the loads. If you have not appointed one, we can point you in the right direction.
The beam and posts
We make the beam and the two posts, cut and drilled to bolt together into the goal-post frame your engineer has designed.
Connections and baseplates
The knee connections that join beam to post, and the baseplates that anchor the posts, are fabricated and welded to carry the load through the frame.
Propping and setting the frame
Our own team props the opening, stands the posts on their baseplates, lifts the beam on and bolts the frame up square.
Paperwork for building control
You get the drawings, weld records and declaration of performance, ready for the frame to be inspected and signed off.
When there is no wall left to bear on, the frame stands on its own.
A goal-post frame carries the load down through its own posts to the foundations, so the beam-to-post connections and the baseplates have to be made right. We fabricate the frame to your engineer's design under BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2, welded by coded welders, and set it with our own team, with the drawings and declaration of performance for building control.

Why a goal-post frame is a fabricator's job.
The connections and baseplates carry the whole load, so they are welded and made to the design.
About UIS-
01
Made to your engineer's design
The beam, posts, connections and baseplates are fabricated to the frame your structural engineer specifies, so it stands and carries as designed.
-
02
Coded welding on the connections
The knee connections and baseplates are welded by coded welders to BS EN ISO 9606, with the records supplied.
-
03
BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2, UKCA marked
Fabricated to the execution class domestic and light commercial structural steel is specified against, with the declaration of performance.

Questions clients ask us.
It is a beam on two posts, bolted into a frame that stands on its own. You need one where an opening is too wide, or removes too much wall, for a beam to bear on the brickwork at each end. Your engineer decides if it is the right answer.
The posts stand on steel baseplates, which usually bear onto pad or strip foundations that your engineer designs and your builder forms. We supply the baseplates and holding-down details to suit.
Yes. A goal-post frame is designed by a structural engineer, including the connections and baseplates, and building control will want the calculations. If you have not got one, we can point you in the right direction.
Both. Our own team props the opening, sets the frame on its baseplates and bolts it up, then hands over the paperwork. Making good around it is your builder's work.
We are based in South Yorkshire and fabricate and install across the UK with our own teams.
