Steel for Chimney Breast Removal
Take a chimney breast out and support what is left above it, with an RSJ or gallows brackets sized by your engineer and made and fitted by us. We detail, fabricate and install to your engineer's design, to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2 and UKCA marked.

Remove a chimney breast on the ground or first floor and the brickwork above it, often another breast and the stack, still has to be held up. That is done either with a steel beam spanning across the opening, or with gallows brackets: steel brackets bolted to the chimney wall that carry the breast above on a cantilever. Your structural engineer decides which suits your chimney and sizes the steel; we produce the fabrication drawings and make it to BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2. Our own team then supports the breast, fits the brackets or beam, and hands over the paperwork building control will want.

Working to your engineer's design
Your structural engineer decides whether gallows brackets or a beam suit your chimney, and sizes the steel. If you have not appointed one, we can point you in the right direction.
Gallows brackets
Steel brackets bolted to the sound chimney wall carry the breast above on a cantilever, where your engineer confirms the wall can take it.
Support beams
Where brackets will not do, a steel beam or RSJ spans the opening to carry the brickwork and stack above.
Support and removal
The breast above is supported while the lower section is taken out, so nothing is left unheld during the work.
Fitting and paperwork
Our own team fits the brackets or beam and hands over the drawings and declaration of performance for building control.

Whatever is left above the removed breast, brickwork, another breast or the stack, has to be carried, so the steel has to be right. We make the gallows brackets or beam to your engineer's design under BS EN 1090 Execution Class 2 and fit it with our own team, with the drawings and declaration of performance for building control.

Questions clients ask us.
Yes. A structural engineer decides how the breast above is supported and sizes the steel, and building control will want their calculations. If you have not got one, we can point you in the right direction.
It depends on the load above and whether the chimney wall is sound enough to carry gallows brackets. Your structural engineer makes that call. We fabricate and fit whichever the design calls for.
If the chimney is on a party wall, the Party Wall Act may apply and your neighbour may need to be served notice. That is a matter for you and your surveyor. We handle the steel once the go-ahead is given.
We supply and fit the supporting steel and can support the breast above while it is done. The removal itself and making good are usually your builder's work, coordinated with us.
